Captive Portal Media Guidelines

Optimize your captive portal media files for better performance and visual quality across all devices. These recommendations help ensure your media files look great and load efficiently.

General

Stick to the file size limits shown in the Unwired Edge Cloud Console as a general rule of thumb. You will be allowed to upload files above these limits, but we generally recommend keeping files within the specified limits for optimal performance.

Image Formats

  • Format: Use JPG for photographs, PNG for transparency and simple graphics, you can also consider WEBP for better compression.

  • DPI: Irrelevant for digital: DPI (dots per inch) matters only for print. For web, focus on pixel dimensions and file size for optimal display quality.

Background Images

  • File size: Background images should be optimized to minimize loading times without compromising quality.

  • Considerations: One image is used across all devices. Ensure the image does not crop or distort on smaller screens.

  • Testing: Test background images on various devices to ensure they scale appropriately.

  • Example: A 1920x1080px high-resolution image works well for larger screens, but optimize for faster loading.

Logo Images

  • Aspect ratio: Logos should maintain an aspect ratio between 1:1 and broader formats like 4:3, 16:9, or 21:9.

  • Size: Maximum visualized height is 100px. Logos will not be scaled beyond this limit, so ensure clarity at this size.

Content Images

  • Max Width: Images within content or widgets should have a maximum visualized width of 600px.

  • Max Height: Content image height should not exceed the typical screen height (800-1000px), avoiding the need for excessive scrolling.

Other Media

Video and Audio

  • File size: Uploads up to 300MB are allowed.

    • For larger files, plase host them externally (they will not be available offline).

  • Format: Stick to browser-compatible formats like MP4 for video and MP3 for audio.

PDF Files:

  • Loading: Optimize PDFs for quick loading and easy readability on mobile devices.

  • Usage: PDFs can only be linked, not embedded, in the captive portal.
